Birthday party flowers with color, character and an easy plan
Put flowers where people gather: the dining tables, welcome spot and gift table. Repeat one bold flower across the room, then use the birthday person’s favorite color as the finishing touch.
Plan my flower box
- 013 stems per small vase
- 02Arrive 1–2 days before
- 03Keep cake and flowers separate
How many stems do you need?
- One guest table
- 3 small vases with 3 flower stems each: 9 flower stems. For large sunflowers, test 1–2 per vase instead.
- One welcome vase
- 5 sunflowers in a broad, heavy vase, with 3–5 greenery stems if you want a mixed design.
- One bouquet-bar guest
- 5 flower stems and 2 greenery stems. For 20 guests, count 100 flower stems and 40 greenery stems before adding spares.
For eight tables with two small vases each and three sunflowers per vase, use 48 sunflower stems. Add two welcome vases with five stems each for 58; a 10% spare allowance brings the target to 64. Test your vases: broad sunflower heads need space and a stable base.
Choose flowers that work for the occasion
Sunflowers give a bright focal point with few stems. Alstroemeria works for smaller mixed vases and take-home bouquets. Carnations and chrysanthemums also hold well in water through a party.
For spring parties, use a soft palette of roses or seasonal tulips; summer and autumn suit sunflower-led tables. For an outdoor party, hold the vases in a cool room until setup and place them in shade. Put flowers beside the cake, keeping stems, leaves and petals off the food.
Give yourself time to arrange
Start your order about two weeks before the party, once your table and guest counts are set. Choose arrival one or two days before: Thursday or Friday for a Saturday party. Set aside a receiving-and-hydration session, then make the vases the day before. Use your cart’s arrival date for the flowers, separate from the party date.
After choosing your flowers, open the arrival-date picker in your cart and select the day you want the box delivered.
From the box into water
- Unpack as soon as the box arrives. Check the stems, then separate the varieties into clean buckets.
- Fill buckets with fresh water and cut-flower food mixed at the packet’s dosage. Strip foliage that would sit under the waterline.
- Recut the stem ends with sharp, clean snips and put them straight into water. Let them drink for several hours before arranging.
- Keep buckets in a cool room away from sun, heaters and ripening fruit. Check water daily and replace cloudy water; keep finished arrangements in water until setup.
A flower budget
The 80-stem sunflower box covers the 58-stem table-and-welcome recipe above, leaving 22 stems for spares and gifts. Spread over eight guest tables, the full box’s flower cost is $13.60 per table. Budget for vases separately; a 20-person bouquet bar needs a larger stem order.

Frequently asked questions
How many flowers do I need for a birthday party table?
Start with three small vases holding three flower stems each, or nine stems per table. Large sunflowers can fill a vase with fewer stems; test one arrangement in the actual vase.
How many flowers should I buy for a bouquet bar?
At five flower stems and two greenery stems per guest, 20 guests need 100 flower stems and 40 greenery stems. Add spare stems, then round each variety up to the box quantity shown.
Can I decorate a birthday cake with these flowers?
Use these flowers in a separate vase beside the cake. Cut flowers sold for decoration are not food ingredients; keep their stems, leaves, petals and water off the cake.
When should flowers arrive for a Saturday party?
Select Thursday or Friday arrival. Recut and hydrate them on arrival, then make the vases before party-day setup.
How do I send flowers home with guests?
Offer small arrangements in take-home vases or wrap bouquets shortly before guests leave. Include flower food and tell guests to recut the stems and put them in water at home.
